At the start of 2020 we had a diary full of UK and Ireland tours. Corporate events, award ceremonies and a couple of festivals thrown in to the mix. This all changed on the 13th March – a few days before the UK went into it’s first COVID lockdown. We had just moved into a new warehouse, taken delivery of brand new equipment and had done the first date of a UK tour, then the 13th hit. We had equipment out at a gala that evening and little did we know, when we sent it out, that when it returned it would spend the next 6 months locked away in the warehouse. Within 48 hours our diary was cleared. The rising pandemic, uncertainty and fear resulted in all of our shows being either postponed or cancelled – even events over the following 12 months where clients had already paid the balance of the invoice.
Between the 13th March and writing this post we have had 5 jobs, lost a huge chunk of our annual revenue but we are still standing. Thanks to the loyalty of our clients we’ve been able to keep the lights on (but heating off) and we’re now starting to see light at the end of a very dark tunnel. The event industry has been hit extremely hard. We’re still in a ‘non operational’ scenario with large scale events and a lot of corporate meetings have gone online. Despite this I am still confident that we will come back bigger than before.
Diversification is the key to seeing this pandemic through and with that we opened out own studio space in December 2020 dedicated to live and pre-recorded events. Corporate events, music gigs and more can be streamed and recorded from our studio in Wakefield. However our new plans don’t stop there. 2021 will see DSM Productions Ltd. start to develop into a wider field of expertise. Event management and delivery will be a key aspect of the forward plan and I’m looking forward to being able to work with current and new clients on some exciting events. Whether it be a staff awards or a charitable fund raiser both myself and the team are eager to get back at it when it is safe to do so.
The extra time has given us the opportunity to refine our warehouse process along with a few other additions which help us to achieve our goal of sustainability and creating an environmentally friendly production company.
We’re also looking to expand into other services such as safety consultation and large event planning – everything from the trackway through to production, waste removal and everything in between delivering a true one stop shop.
It is no secret that 2020 has certainly been a challenging year for the entire live event industry. From production companies to hauliers, suppliers to freelancers there have been many casualties of this pandemic and I have no doubt that 2021 will be just a tough, but I’m heading into this new year with a new focus and new knowledge.
Finally, I would like to welcome all our clients, friends and colleagues into 2021 and I look forward to working with you all over the next 12 months and beyond – in whatever capacity that may be, we will come back!
WE MAKE EVENTS!
