#LightUpWakefield – Theatre Royal Wakefield, December 2020
As part of a district wide project, Wakefield Council helped to fund organisations in lighting up buildings, landmarks and cultural assets to celebrate Christmas. The idea simple: light up a building and make it stand out! Simple… not quite so.
Architectural lighting is a little bit more complex than meets the eye. The natural structure and materials of any building will change the way it should be lit. We’ve worked with Theatre Royal Wakefield in the past so we knew what could be achieved.
The building is a mix of Grade 2 listed & modern elegance. Brickwork, ironworks, steel and glass all come together to create a stunning contrast and its these differences we wanted to highlight. With the theatre itself being listed, we couldn’t do anything to change, modify or damage the structure so we had to plan how we would run power and control cables as well as ensuring that public safety was prioritised as the building sits on a main road in and out of Wakefield City Centre.
We worked alongside the talented Technical Manager that the theatre and for 2 consecutive nights lit up the front of the building in varying colours. Concentrating the light onto specific parts of the building we were able to deliver an impressive light show to the passing public.
